Wondering how best to improve your English or any given language? Are you interested in studying in a country abroad? Do you share a passion for children? Do you remember your teacher telling you that the best way to learn a language is to live with the people who speak it?
Why not take the opportunity to work as an au pair?
An exciting combination of living with a family abroad offering you the chance to study the local language or study a subject of your liking and get a weekly payment. In return you will look after the children of the family and yes, you are now a family member. Do not just observe, live the experience.
Generally you should:
Be 18 to 30 years (the minimum or maximum age limit applies to some countries and varies depending on the destination)
Have professional or practical childcare experience of at least 200 hours, should you need to look after a child under 2 years (depending on country of destination different conditions may apply)
Agree to commit to stay at least one full year in a European country, the USA, Canada or elsewhere and be prepared to provide care for children of the family up to 30 hours a week (the length of stay and times providing family care may differ depending on the destination country)
Have completed compulsory secondary education
Have sufficient communicative level of English
Have adequate communicative level of local language
Have no criminal record
An Au Pair programme takes place as part of and within the context of a cultural exchange experience and so you will have the opportunity by living with the host family that provides you accommodation to improve your language skills in general, to take courses in a foreign language or study at a college or university, to get to know a new culture and gain a valuable experience abroad. In return, you will help the family with the care of children and do some light housework.
Why not become a member of a family which can help in the overall linguistic and cultural experience?
Accommodation will be at the family’s house, in a private room and you will be able to make use of the common areas of the house.
